Johan was Duke of Finland and pursued an independent policy, to the point that Erik XIV eventually convicted him of high treason. After his release from captivity, he was involved in the rebellion against his brother and became King of Sweden.

Queen Katarina was the sister of the King of Poland, and remained faithful to Catholicism. The couple had three children, including Sigismund, who took over the throne after his father.

Queen Gunilla was involved in charitable work, and established a children's home in Uppsala. She was Lutheran, and is believed to have influenced Johan III in a Protestant direction.
