King Gustaf V ruled for many years. He was the last monarch to wield political influence, and by the time he died in 1950, popular rule had replaced royal power.

Queen Victoria was a descendant of Gustav Vasa, and was closely related to the German emperor. She had Solliden Palace built on Öland, where the climate was better for her poor health.
