INGRID BENSON

Born 2004

"For me, drawing is an almost magical experience; being able to convey visual information through the pen. This is where the foundation for my drawing lies: gathering information, cementing experiences, a snapshot of my world for a moment. The beautiful thing about drawing is that it’s not about copying – it’s a process that interprets and transforms reality. In drawing, I’m free to depict reality as I experience it, not as it looks.

For me, the creative process always begins with an idea, more like a feeling or a question that I want to explore than a clear image of the artwork I want to create. Through drawing, I gather the information I believe I need, before letting the process run freely. The longer I keep on, the less significant the actual motif that I’m depicting becomes. The drawing takes on a life of its own. Every mark on the paper poses a thousand questions, and every new mark must relate to the previous one. In the act of drawing, a unique language emerges where the lines speak."

THE SELECTION COMMITTEE'S MOTIVATION:
Ingrid Benson uses drawing in an exploratory practice. She constructs environments populated with symbols, recognisable objects and perspectives, juxtaposing line drawings with monochrome surfaces. Together, this creates worlds within the field of tension between homeliness and mysticism.
