GUSTAV HARRISSON RODEBLAD
Born 1999
"I use drawing as a foundation in my practice. A tool that extends into various media. Sometimes as preparation for painting, but the act of drawing itself is not limited to paper and pencil. I think the word ‘drawing’ or the act of drawing is usually seen as a traditional form of expression. Perhaps it’s more about a state of mind or a specific action. For me, in the process of painting, I use brushstrokes as if they were a pencil on paper. A drawing derives its power from the lines and their intensity, often acting as a skeleton on which a painting can emerge.
I believe that drawing with a brush is an intuitive way of moving forward the dialogue between the paint and the canvas. There’s a speed in drawing that I feel is essential to the creative process. The contrast that arises when using oil paint but applying it with a sketching hand is fascinating. They play off each other, and what remains is something fresh. Traces are formed, and it’s somewhere there that my process of creating a work begins."
Currently studying for a bachelor’s degree at Umeå Academy of Fine Arts
